INT. DARK, AIRY BEDROOM - DAY

A single lamp reveals a man hunched over a desk, scratching words on a paper. He hums a simple tune.
Crumpled papers and opened envelopes litter the floor. Floral stamps mark the front of the envelopes, which have a
return addressee of Catherine Driscol.

A sticky spoon rests next to a nearly-empty grape jelly jar by the man’s elbow.

He continues to write the letter. KNOCK at the door.
NANA - the man’s cynical grandmother, dressed in robe and shower cap - shouts through the door.

NANA

Virgilius!

Virgil ignores it. Harder KNOCK.

Virgilius! She opens the door.

NANA (CONT’D)

NANA (CONT’D)

Xavier Virgilius Bentley the third, did you not hear me knocking?

VIRGILIUS
Nana, I told you to formally refer
to me as XV! It’s how I operate.

NANA
(mockingly)
Well, XV, you’ve been locked up in
this room all day! What are you
doing?

VIRGILIUS
I’m writing to Catherine. Do you
mind?

NANA
Just make sure you’re finished
before supper. I’m making your
favorite peanut butter and jelly
sandwiches.

Nana turns to leave, then pauses.

NANA (CONT’D)
By the way, what does LOL mean?

He rolls his eyes at her.

VIRGILIUS
Laugh out loud!
(to himself)
I can’t believe she doesn’t know
these things.

Nana leaves and closes the door behind her. Virgilius returns to writing.
VIRGILIUS (CONT’D)
(speaking as he’s writing)
P.S. I just love the letters you’ve
been sending me, Catherine.

He smiles, folds the letter and slips it into an envelope.

Virgilius!

WOMAN (CONT’D)

She opens the door.

Virgilius looks up from his desk.

VIRGILIUS
Nana, why you got to be all up in
my business all the time?

NANA
You’ve got mail.

Virgilius smiles.
